Women artists, according to the period, have been known variously as ‘keishu-gaka’ (accomplished women artists), ’joryu-gaka’ (a term designating the emergence of women artists forming new currents of art among male artists) and ‘josei-gaka’ (a term merely designating the gender of the artist). This exhibition will stimulate thought about the roles women artists have born or been made to bear in society through the works of women painters based in Kyoto from the modern to the contemporary. Around 80 works by representative artists such as Uemura Shoen, Ito Shoha, Komatsu Kaei, Akino Fuku, Okusa Miyoko, Yurimoto Keiko, Mitani Toshiko, Hirota Tatsu, Kitagawa Eigetsu and Tashiro Masako will be displayed.
