C Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. On loan from the City of Amsterdam (A. van der Hoop Bequest) In 17th century Dutch painting the conversing between family members and lovers can be seen in great abundance – a focal point being the written letter. Through representative painters of the Dutch Golden Age, Johannes Vermeer, Pieter de Hooch, and Gerard ter Borch, we can lay witness to these familial bonds and dialogues. The museum is the first to show Vermeer's Woman in Blue Reading a Letter following its restoration and approximately 50 works gathered from throughout Europe and America will be exhibited.
