Artists' wishes to found a school of fine arts were met in 1880, when Kyoto Prefectural
School of Fine Arts, the first public school of fine arts in Japan, was established
inside the Kyoto Imperial Garden. The management of the School was later transferred
from the prefectural Government to the municipal authorities. As it became bigger
with more courses added, including industrial arts and sculpture, the school often
changed its name. In 1909, Kyoto College of Fine Arts, the advanced school for
the graduates, was established and attached to the School.
The School of Fine Arts was succeeded by Doda Municipal High School of Arts and
Crafts. The College of Fine Arts became Kyoto City University of Fine Arts after
World War II. In 1969, amalgamating Kyoto City Junior College of Music, the University
changed the name into Kyoto City University of Arts. Both Kyoto Prefectural School
of Fine Arts and Kyoto College of Fine Arts have produced many great artists and
industrialists, including the prize winners of an Order of Cultural Merit such
as Seibo Kitamura, Insho Domoto, and Shoko Uemura.
Today many future artists are devoted to creation of a new art culture at the
High School and the University. |
