| Kyoto Unveiled Its New Aspect of a City Hosting International Meetings in 1966 |

5th Meeting of the Japan-America Trade and Economic Integration Commission |
On 21 May 1966, Kyoto International Conference Hall was opened at Takaragaike
as the first national international conference hall in Japan. Nine years had passed
since the Japanese Government leaders thought of building a first-class international
conference hall in Japan.
Even from the conceptional phase, Kyoto City and the surrounding areas had been
designated as the site for the hall. Many places were proposed to invite it. The
reasons Takaragaike was chosen from among so many places were Takaragaike being
located inside Kyoto City that represents Japanese history and culture and its
beautiful natural environments.
The building was constructed according to Mr. Yukio Otani's design which was selected
from among 195 works entered in an open competition that was again held for the
first time in Japan. Kyoto International Conference Hall was opened with "The
Fifth Japan-US Joint Committee on Trade and Business." Since then, as the
major facilities of the city hosting conventions, the Hall has been used for international
meetings in various fields, including "The 3rd session of the Conference
of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change"
or so-called Global Warming Prevention Meeting held in December 1997. |
